"O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him." Psalm 34:8
Why don't people come to the Lord? Why do they resist the gentle invitations of the Holy Spirit? It's because they haven't experienced Him.
We All Know!
Everybody knows, deep down inside, that God exists. The great apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans;
"For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them." Romans 1:19
God has made the fact of His existence "plain" to us all, one must work against what God has made plain. This is ultimate foolishness;
"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." Psalm 14:1
What If There is No God!
I know, in my heart, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that God not only exists, but that He is my Father. But let's assume, as so many foolishly do, that there is no God. What will I have lost having believed, and lived according to His Word? By honoring God's Word and living according to His holy standard I have missed out on hangovers, DUI's, broken home, addictions, STD's, among many other not so great results of ignoring God's directions for living;
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
The reason God hates sin is because of the death that it releases into our lives, not because of what it does to or means to Him. God is perfect and holy, and beyond harm; it's only our good He is concerned about.
God's holy standard may require that we reject some things that our flesh lusts for, and do some things that our flesh sincerely does NOT want to do. All of His commands are for our God, because that is God's main concern regarding us.
"For I know my thoughts about you, says the Lord; thoughts for good, not for evil, to give you a future and and a hope" Jeremiah 29:11
God is rooting for you! He wants to be a part of your life, and make your life both now and in eternity, better.
So, lets' say I've lived my whole life believing in and living according to His holy standard, only to fade into oblivion. Really, then, I've lost nothing worth considering. But what if the opposite is true.
But What If He Does Exist?
So now consider that I have lived my life in deference to His existence and will as revealed in His Word (the Bible); believing, or pretending to believe, that God does not exist. What then?
So I live according to the lusts of my flesh, I indulge in drunkenness, sexual immorality, and hedonism in all of its forms. I have lived my life my way, submitted to no one. I have allowed myself the pleasures of the flesh, that never truly satisfy, but only leave the void inside. I've resisted the invitations of Holy Spirit, and now I am dead, only to realize that there is a Heaven to gain, and a Hell to shun. What do I do now? Now the reality of an eternity of suffering, separation from the only source of joy and life, God Himself, awaits me. I have lost eternity; I have lost everything.
What If We Just Believe
So to all who may read this, who have not said "Yes" to the Lord's invitation to salvation through Jesus Christ His Son, I say "Just Believe". There is so much that God has in store for we who believe.
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." 1 Corinthians 2:9
Jesus promised that He would return and take us to be with Him forever;
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
Jesus said that He was personally gone away to prepare the place where we will be with Him for all of eternity;
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14:2-3
There are also promises for those who die having refused the Lord's invitations while living;
“Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Lord, open the door for us!’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ Then you will say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ And he will reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you come from. Get away from me, all you who do evil.’ “There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out." John 13:24-28
What if you just believe, it's hands down the only reasonable choice. Once you believe His love and life will fill your heart and you to will know first hand that He is Good. The only regret you'll have is that you didn't believe on Him sooner.
